How long does it take for an email sent to a phone to go through?

I've been doing this since about last night, and it seems to take quite a while for it to go through. Is this true?

How long does it take for an email sent to a phone to go through?
tried this many times. Most of the time went thru instantly. Other times never went thru. Don't know why it didn't.
