What are the consequences of sending a prank email from a hacked school account pretending to be a teacher?

I know someone that recently hacked into an email account of a school, meaning they guessed the password, and sent an email pretending to be an administrator. There were no threats. It was a joke. I heard it may be a felony though.

What are the consequences of sending a prank email from a hacked school account pretending to be a teacher?
First, you would have to prove that it was that student. Did you see him? Is it on tape?

I know the police won't do anything on a post of myspace saying would would hurt someone. There is a sad story about a girl who went to the police with a bunch of email letters, saying she wanted protection, and the police sent her home, and she was killed that night.

But the point is, you have to prove it was that person. And that is a hard thing to do. But I think it depends if you are in public school or private school. If your public then your a government worker, and yes, the person who hacks your computer just hacked government property. So yes that is a felony.

If your private and not a county school, then no. It would be the same as if they hacked a business, and the business can sue them for any "loss" they may have because of this.
